Scott’s Thoughts
In 1999, I moved from the Nashville area in Tennessee to attend college in Utah. One of the first things I did was find where events for Star Wars CCG and Star Trek CCG were being held. Lucky for me, there were two stores in my college town, just 300 yards apart, that hosted events. One ran Star Wars tournaments, while the other ran Star Trek tournaments—but they always seemed to schedule them on the same day! I ended up running back and forth between the stores, trying not to get disqualified, playing fast, and loving both games.
The Star Wars competition was surprisingly easy. This was before operatives were fixed, and many players weren’t even using objectives from Special Edition. I won multiple tournaments just because the competition wasn’t up to speed. Winning shirts was a big deal, especially since I had never managed to win one back in Nashville, where the competition included heavyweights like Clint Hays, Steven Lewis, Johnny Chu, and others.
However, the Star Trek events were a different story. I came in confident, playing my quick-moving Bajorans and winning games easily—until…….. McKay showed up.
McKay played a slow, methodical Borg deck and analyzed every move to ensure the best results. Games against him often went to time, and I’m someone who loves fast-paced games. Playing slow felt like torture. To win a shirt, I had to beat McKay. He became my nemesis (in a friendly way), and I found myself constantly thinking about how to beat him…probably should have been doing homework or hanging out with other college kids…… I played mock games in my dorm, crafting new strategies just to get the upper hand. I didn’t see McKay after that Summer Term and Fall Semester of college. I always wondered what happened to him.
Fast forward to a few months ago: I noticed an order come through from a McKay living in Utah, and I wondered if it was the McKay.
Sure enough, I soon received a message asking to trade some higher-end Star Trek cards, including a box of Blaze of Glory. We met up last week, caught up, and I learned that he moved away from Utah before 2000—explaining why I never saw him again. He’s still playing the classic Trek game with his kids, steering clear of the newer PC-made cards. It was great to reconnect and see that our friendly rivalry left a lasting impression on both of us.
